Asymmetries in visual acuity around the visual field

چکیده
Human vision is heterogeneous around the visual field. At a fixed eccentricity, performance better along horizontal than vertical meridian and lower upper meridian. These asymmetric patterns, termed fields, have been found in numerous tasks, including those mediated by contrast sensitivity spatial resolution. However, it unknown whether resolution asymmetries are confined to cardinal meridians or how far they extend into hemifields. Here, we measured acuity at isoeccentric peripheral locations (10 deg eccentricity), every 15° of polar angle. On each trial, observers judged orientation (± 45°) one four equidistant, suprathreshold grating stimuli varying frequency (SF). block, as function stimulus SF 4 24 locations. We estimated 75%-correct threshold, cutoff point (i.e., chance-level), slope psychometric for location. higher estimates acuity) were most pronounced decreased gradually angular distance from increased. This gradual change with angle reflected shift without changes slope. The same pattern was under binocular monocular viewing conditions. findings advance our understanding processing field help constrain models perception.

Visual field asymmetries and allocation of attention in visual scenes.
Single items such as objects, letters or words are often presented in the right or left visual field to examine hemispheric differences in cognitive processing. However, in everyday life, such items appear within a visual context or scene that affects how they are represented and selected for attention. Here we examine processing asymmetries for a visual target within a frame of other elements ...
متن کاملVisual field asymmetries in attention and learning.
It has been suggested that attentional resolution is greater in the lower than in the upper visual field. As there is no corresponding asymmetry between the areas in the primary visual cortex where the input from upper and lower visual fields is processed, an 'attentional filter' has been proposed to act in one or more higher visual cortical areas in order to constrict the availability of visua...
متن کاملPerceived length in the central visual field: evidence for visual field asymmetries
Visual performance for judging the length of a simultaneously presented pair of radial lines, reciprocally opposed by 180 degrees at a central fixation point, was assessed for 24 radial positions of test lines, for three viewing conditions (binocular, left and right monocular) and five different standard line sizes (1.43-7.13 degrees ). Generally, the results showed underestimation of the test ...
متن کاملSymptomatic Rathke’s Cleft Cyst Presenting With Decreased Visual Acuity
Background and Importance: Symptomatic Rathke’s cleft cyst is a rare lesion that often presents without any symptoms. Case Presentation: We report a 40-year-old female with symptomatic Rathke’s cleft cyst located in the sellar and suprasellar region. She presented with visual disturbance, headache, weight gain, hypothyroidism and amenorrhea. The patient underwent surgery and ...
متن کاملThe role of perceptual reference frames in visual field asymmetries.
The direct access model of hemispheric asymmetry was tested in a letter reflection (normal of reflected) judgement task. In the baseline condition letters were presented in their upright orientation, and reaction times were faster to letters presented in the right visual field than to those presented in the left visual field. In two other conditions the slides, and thus the letters, were rotate...
